Abstract

A green rural road is a road project that has been designed and built with the need for sustainability and global standards. Basically, the green road is one of the key areas for a sustainable concept with social, environmental and economic aspect addressed clearly. It is significant that stakeholders of rural road construction include a sustainability criterion in their projects. Therefore, the purpose of this study is aimed to identify the factors and criteria for the development of My Green Rural Road Index, to categorize the identified elements into specified criteria and finally to compare the factors of My Green Rural Road Index (MyRRI) with another established index in Malaysia. The questionnaire is validated through group discussion involved road experts from UPNM, UTM and UiTM and questionnaires were distributed to identify the sustainability factors of rural road in Lumut, Perak with 100 respondents. Then the data were examined using SPSS Wiff factor analysis method. The findings of the study show that there are four main sustainable factors and based on the findings the most important criteria in Lumut was 'Environmental and Water Management' due to its location and socio-economic activity. As expected the study able to finalize 4 rural road criteria and 33 elements. The outcome of this study will be used as main component in MyRRI as the tool to assess the rural road development and maintenance work in Malaysia.
